Thermal Spraying is a process used to form a continuous
coating by melting consumable material into droplets and impinging these
droplets on the substrate, to impart properties unobtainable by base metal
selection alone. The mechanism of bonding to surface in thermal sprayings
is both mechanical interlocking and atomic interaction, with the shear
strength around 7 MPa (10 ksi). The thickness of the coatings may range
from 25 µm to 2.5 mm (0.001 – 0.1 in). Coating materials include
metals, alloys, carbides, ceramics, plastics, cermets, and special structures
comprising combinations of the above.

Typical Applications
Thermal spray coatings are used for a broad
range of applications within the field of wear protection and other
requirements:
-
Abrasion: Piston Rods, Shaft
Bushes.
-
Erosion: Pump Impellers, Mixing
Units.
-
Adhesion: Shrink Fits, Bearings,
Combustion Chambers.
-
Electrical Insulation: Insulation
at elevated temperatures.
-
Thermal Barrier: Combustion
Chambers.
-
High-temperature Corrosion:
Steel Components.
-
Abradability: Labyrinths,
Rotating Compressors.
-
Repair, Restoration: All Kinds
of applications.

Benefits
|
|
Stability
Thermal spraying process involves high levels of
thermal and kinetic energies,
it imparts very little heat to the substrate – less than 150°C
(300°F) – thereby avoiding metallurgical change, distortion,
and oxidation to the base part.
|
Versatility
Thermal spraying offers industrial design maximum
flexibility, due to its nearly unlimited usable materials selection. The
combination of low temperature and high bond strength, allows thermal
spray coatings to be selectively applied to specific part areas using
a variety of masking processes, reducing manufacturing costs by eliminating
unnecessary processing steps. |

|
|
Improvement
Applying the appropriate coatings is possible
to improve part performance, dramatically lengthen its useful life. |
Costs Reduction
Using Thermal Spraying,Spraying, engineers
can design less costly base materials parts and just "spot coating"
critical wear areas. Otherwise, scrap parts can be reclaimed by restoring
dimensions with coatings. |
|
|
Competitive Advantages
Thermal Spray can create component parts
with unique technological features, eliminating manufacturing processes
like heat treating and chrome plating, and reduce grinding/machining operations.
